The Rodney Miller-trained Derulo (2 g ex Tiptoe by Viscount) opened his account on debut over 950 metres at Cairns on Thursday and in the process handed the late Aquis stallion Spill The Beans (Sntizel) his seventh first-crop winner which saw him move one ahead of Pride Of Dubai (Street Cry) in the race to become Australia’s champion first season sire (by winners).

The two-year-old gelding drew clear of his rivals inside the last 100 metres and was eased at the line to post an emphatic six and three quarter length victory over Fiveaclocksomwhere (Siderus), whilst Sourting Sara (Mahisara) was another length and a quarter back in third.

The gelding becomes the third winner from five foals to race out of the unraced Viscount (Quest For Fame) mare Tiptoe. She  is a half-sister to Crawl (Dr Grace), who was trained by John Hawkes for Woodlands Stud to win the 2001 Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m), being out of the winner Traipse (Bletchingly). That mare also produced multiple Listed winner Old Man (Dr Grace) and is the grandam of Group 2 winner and Group 1 placed Marching (Commands). Traipse is also the dam of Treppes (Domesday) who produced multiple Group 1 winner and now Widden Stud-based sire Trapeze Artist (Snitzel).

Derulo was bought for $80,000 by Aquis Farms, James Moore and Summit Racing from the draft of Aquis Farms at last year's Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. His brother was passed in for $37,500 at this year's Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale.

Spill The Beans now sits at the head of the leading first season sires table in Australia by winners whilst he is second in the table by earnings behind Pride Of Dubai (Street Cry). Spill The Beans died last November after standing for just four seasons in Australia, during which time he covered 605 mares. He also shuttled to the National Stud in Newmarket for one season in 2018.
