The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Argenteus (3 c Written Tycoon - Golden Penny by Blevic) finally got his head in front on Wednesday when landing a narrow victory in the Casino Prince at Vinery Maiden Handicap (1250m) at Canterbury.

He competed exclusively in stakes grade as a juvenile and was having his third start as a three-year-old, having finished second at Kembla Grange most recently on August 29.

The colt showed a good attitude when coming out on top of a hard fought battle with Private Cheetah (Pierro), eventually beating him by a head, while Pretty Good (Savabeel) finished another two and a quarter away in third.

“He’s met some good company and performed quite well, he was just a little bit immature but the penny is dropping with him,” Snowden said.

“I believe he can get back to where he started because he’s got a bit of presence about him.”

Purchased by James Harron for $900,000 at the 2019 Magic Million Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of John Muir’s Milburn Creek, the colt is the third winner out of dual Listed scorer Golden Penny (Belvic), who was herself purchased by Damon Gabbedy’s Belmont Bloodstock for $270,000 at the Inglis Great Southern Weanling and Bloodstock Sale in 2017 carrying Argenteus in utero.

In 2018 Golden Penny produced a colt by the late Widden Stud sire Sebring (More Than Ready), before producing a filly by the same sire the following year and she has most recently produced a filly by Written Tycoon’s (Iglesia) Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m)-winning son Capitalist.

Written Tycoon was relocated to Arrowfield Stud in the Hunter Valley from Woodside Park in Victoria for the 2020 season where he is standing for a fee of $77,000 (inc GST).
