So You Win records his first stakes victory in Saturday’s January Cup.
The Chris Waller-trained So You Win (7 g ex Rhode Island Red by Tale Of The Cat) recorded his first stakes victory in Saturday's January Cup (Listed, 2000m) at Rosehill and in doing so became the 38th stakes winner for Coolmore's So You Think (High Chaparral).
Stakes placed multiple times previously, So You Win came with a well-timed run and closed late to beat his stablemate Mubariz (Dansili) by a head. There was another four and three quarter lengths back to Attorney (Makfi) in third.
"We sent him to Queensland just to get that confidence back into him and a change of scenery," said stable representative Damien Fitton.
"It works really well with older geldings, then bring them back down when they've got that confidence and they're in a bit better form.
"That's pleasing to see, he's been a very consistent gelding for the owners and the stable. It's great to get that win on the board."
Fitton outlined plans for So You Win following Saturday's victory."We'll just continue to find these cup races for him, like the Australia Day Cup," Fitton said.
"Group Three, Listed that's his level. It's more so spacing his runs and keeping him happy and interested."
"He's in really good form and he's very fresh and loving his work at home."
So You Win was bought by his trainer for NZ$220,000 at the 2016 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale from the draft of Hallmark Stud. Saturday's victory took his record to nine wins and 14 placings in 46 starts with his career earnings now totalling $795,765.
Bred by Colm Snatry, So You Win is out of Rhode Island Red (Tale Of The Cat) who died in 2020 after producing a colt by Trapeze Artist (Snitzel). He is the best of four winners out of his dam who is a half-sister to Grade One winner Habibti (Tabasco Cat).
