Son of Australian Group 1 winner Irish Lights hands Uncle Mo his 68th stakes winner
After narrowly missing out on a first stakes victory in the Anglesey Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) on October 11, the Aidan O’Brien-trained Lipizzaner (2 c ex Irish Lights by Fastnet Rock) finally added a stakes win to his CV when he landed the Doncaster Stakes (Listed, 6f) on Saturday, handing his Coolmore America-based sire Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie) with his 68th stakes winner.
The three-year-old colt seemed to thrive in the wet conditions, staying on strongly to beat Just Frank (Epaulette) by a length and a quarter and Zamaani (Night Of Thunder) finished another three-quarters of a length further back in third.
Purchased by Ben McElroy for US$650,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale, the colt is out of 2009 Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Irish Lights (Fastnet Rock), whose other two winners are headed by 2016 Silver Shadow Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Omei Sword (High Chaparral), who was also placed at Group 1 level.
The colt also shares a page with Wakefield Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner La Italia (Stravinsky) and Japanese Grade 1 winner Asia Express (Henny Hughes).
A brother to Lippizzaner was purchased by De Meric Sales for US$230,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale from the Eaton Sales draft earlier this year.
Uncle Mo’s progeny is headed by eight top-flight winners and he will stand the 2021 season for an increased fee of US$175,000.
