Pecans set to be covered by I Am Invincible.
Having spent $515,000 on seven during the race fillies section of the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare on Monday, A List Group continued their spending spree on the second day outlying $1,225,500 for eight mares, with the most expensive of their purchases was dual Group 3 winner Pecans (Skilled) - who was offered in foal to Coolmore Stud-based sire Pierro (Lonhro) and sold for $560,000.
The daughter of Skilled (Commands) landed six of her 23 starts, including the Belle of the Turf Handicap (Gr 3, 1600m) and Godolphin Crown (Gr 3, 1300m) which saw her accrue $397,615 in career prize-money. She was catalogued as Lot 357 from the draft of Yarraman Park.
Pecans is no stranger to the sales ring, having been purchased by Australian Bloodstock / Brave Smash for $405,000 at the 2019 Inglis Chairman's Sale and then sent to Pierro.
The mare is out of Listed winner Walnut (Procol Harum), making her a half-sister to Listed winner Succession (Lonhro) and a further six winners.
Christopher Lee of A List Group said he had a good association with Darley and he liked to buy mares from their families, describing them as a good asset to strengthen the A List broodmare band.
"It is very exciting - she is a very good mare," said Lee. "She is a good winner and the family is full of them.
"It is really helping and strengthening the A List broodmare band and keep increasing the mare quality, which is why I purchased this mare. I also have a good association with Darley, which is why this mare appealed to me. I think the price represents value, considering she is in foal to a stallion like Pierro and I am really happy."
Lee said the mare would now be sent to Yarraman Park-based sire I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), along with some of his other mares, including Saintly (Lonhro) who he purchased for $800,000 at last year's edition of the broodmare sale.
"She will go to I Am Invincible. I purchased Sanity last year and she will also go I Am Invincible this year."
On the market, Lee said: "I can see the market is a bit tough at the moment, but because Australian racing is still going on, the market is still finding support. Also Hong Kong is still racing and a lot of my clients are there, so I am not really, really worried."
A List also purchased another mare from a high-class Godolphin family in the unraced Stellaris (Bernardini), who is herself out of Group 3 winner Steflara (Zabeel) - the grandam of Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Flit (Medgalia d'Oro).
Further back this is the same family of dual Group 3 winner Blue Storm (Bluebird) and Listed winner Federal (Medaglia d'Oro). The mare was offered in foal to Darley's resident stallio Astern (Medaglia d'Oro) and she was catalogued as Lot 453 and bought for $275,000.
Over two days of trade, A List has spent $1,740,500 on 15 lots at an average of $116,033.
