The Anthony Freedman trained Our Smokin’ Rock can make a winning start to his spring campaign when he resumes in the Evergreen Turf Handicap (1200m) at Mornington today.
The son of Fastnet Rock got off the mark when resuming last campaign, kicking clear to win a Ballarat maiden by a space with the runner up going on to boost that form by winning at her next time out.
Overlooking a pair of failures on the heavy, Our Smokin’ Rock showed himself to be a useful type in the campaign that followed that first up success.
Heading north for the winter carnival he measured up well, running fifth, in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic behind smart colt Mental, and was a again in behind Mental at his last run prior to a spell.
There he settled a long way back in the listed Daybreak Lover, but powered home to finish fourth, the effort making a big impression.

His winning form out of last campaign puts him right in the mix in a race like this.
Liveforthemoment ran a good race last time and it’s worth noting his good record at Mornington.
He’s run here three times for a win and two placings so we can expect him to be on his game today.
Shot of Laughter has plenty more on his plate here but have to respect his last start win while Tricky Boy is one to forgive for his latest outing. He was well below his best there but could bounce back on a firmer surface today.
