Promising Chris Waller stayer Pentometer should add a third win to his record when he steps out over 1900m at Canterbury this afternoon.
The four-year-old son of Pentire couldn’t have been more impressive here two weeks back, resuming off a 130-day spell with a strong win over 1580m.
He was slow to begin, and allowed to settle towards the back throughout before picking up in the straight and breezing to the line 2.5L clear of second-placed Dolphi’s Boy.
The run produced a weight-adjusted Timeform figure of 87, suggesting he’d matured over the break and that he would likely scale greater heights this time in.
Waller has placed him perfectly today in the 2014 ATC Membership On Sale Now one-metro-win handicap, where he faces just four other rivals.
He carries just half a kilogram more, and links up with Glyn Schofield who is riding at 26 per cent this season for the Waller yard.
Pentometer possesses a nice progressive profile for a race like this and should only improve over the extra trip.
From barrier four Schofield should have options in this small field, but he probably won’t get too far back given the lack of speed in this.
Green Adventure, coming off a maiden win at Goulburn, might well take up the running here so Pentometer should be able to slot into a nice spot just off the speed.
Expect him to be a bit too classy in that final furlong.
Ron Quinton’s Mr Scary might well prove the big danger coming off a pair of minor placings in similar.
He finished 1.3L off at this track and trip 19 days ago behind Tenacitus, and Tenacitus came out on Friday and landed a gutsy win on the Randwick Kensington track.
That run of Mr Scary’s netted a weight-adjusted Timeform figure of 86 which puts him close to what Pentometer produced last start.
He isn’t quite as progressive as Waller’s galloper though and his two wins from 20 starts is certainly testament to that.
He has however never missed a minor placing here and should be somewhere around the money once more.
Kris Lees’ At All Costs is the other one to consider after he wasn’t too far away at Newcastle over 1850m 11 days back.
This is a tougher race but he sheds a kilogram and links up with Hugh Bowman which can only be a good thing.
Fourth-up over this trip he should be ready to fire, and the stable hasn’t had too bad a run of late.
Don’t be surprised if he runs a strong race.
