Northam's Lad Set To Star At Wyong

3 minute read

Voodoo Lad can take out the NBN Cannonball at Wyong on Thursday on his way to bigger and better things.

The Rodney Northam-trained gelding has won his past three outings with the latest a soft success at Scone over 1100m.

He was freshened following the run with connections eyeing off lucrative contests such as the Country Championships and the Scone Guineas.

The Rodney Northam-trained gelding will face one of his stiffer tests in the NBN Cannonball Benchmark 70 Handicap (1200m) at Wyong on Thursday.

While not up against any stars, the gelding faces a group of useful sprinters and will need to be accounting for them if those lucrative race goals into the autumn are to remain realistic.

On weight adjusted ratings, the field profiles evenly however Voodoo Lad is largely expected to show further improvement early in his career.

Watch for a speed battle and genuine clip up front in this one. Eye Striker, Magna Amica and Oils all tend to roll forward.

Voodoo Lad is drawn between the three and can potentially get a drop in behind them.

A strong tempo early should prove telling over the final stages and from there, expect Voodoo Lad to pounce.

His main danger looks to be the Joe Pride-trained Cwmbran.

The gelding has placed in each of his three runs this campaign, the latest at this course over 1100m.

The More Than Ready four-year-old gave the subsequent winner a head start into the straight which proved decisive in the end.

While Cwmbran was running on strongly from a midfield third in the small field, he was just given a shade too much to do.

Fourth up and rising to 1200m, Cwmbran warrants plenty of respect.

There are a swag of value players in the contest.

Isorich was placed at Canterbury last start and while yet to win this campaign is holding form well.

He is yet to finish out of the money in three runs on his home track with both career wins coming at the course.

Making up the remainder of the value runners are Eye Striker, Mr Entertainer and the Tracey Bartley-trained Magna Amica.

While all honest types, they don’t have the upside of Voodoo Lad who looks ready to fire fresh in the NBN Cannonball Benchmark 70 Handicap (1200m) at Wyong on Thursday.
