In the driving rain, Erevann showed plenty of ability to make a winning debut on the round 1600m turf course at Deauville last week, coming from the rear of the field to weave a passage and stroll across the winning line in eye-catching style.
The son of Dubawi broke evenly from the starting stalls and jockey Christophe Soumillon allowed the two-year-old to relax in the first half when settled around twelfth position, seven lengths off the leader towards the back of the main group. In order to find better ground as the rain continued to fall heavily, the field ran a little off the inside running rail.
Rimsky set a sensible slower pace throughout and at halfway the winner was about ten lengths behind with the field beginning to stretch out a little. However, when the group passed the 600m marker, the speed was falling and the runners bunched up where it appeared many had chances.
For the Jean-Claude Rouget trained colt there was only a pair of horses behind with 500m left and he needed luck with the field panning out across the course. Christophe Soumillon kept calm and the newcomer gradually made progress in the home straight. With 300m to go, Erevann was poised behind the front-line and travelling strongly. The jockey asked for more passing the 200m pole and there was a quick and significant response bursting through the gaps and accelerating to the lead going two lengths clear. Now Soumillon was allowed to cheekily ease down to a stroll passing the winning post and scoring by three-quarters of a length.
Lev, who was second came from a similar position and made good headway late on while there a promising effort by the third, Etatique.
The Aga Khan owned colt is open to plenty of progress for one of the leading trainers in France who is in great form currently (30% winning strike rate in last 50 runners). The stallion (Dubawi) has over 200 individual Stakes winners including Ghaiyyath (the world's top-rated horse of 2020) and top class 1600m performer, The Revenant. His dam, Ervedya also is noteworthy as the winner of the 2015 G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (1600m) at Longchamp and the G1 Coronation Stakes (1600m) at Royal Ascot (UK). It will be interesting to see how the career of Erevann pans out.
