Katy's Lane, under Pierre Strydom, showed she is pure class as she kicked away to win the R275 000, Grade 3, Fillies Mile (1600m) at Turffontein on Saturday with contemptious ease.
It was the second consecutive graded win for the Tyrone Zackey trained daughter of Tamburlaine, after she had cruised home in the Grade 3 Starling Stakes three weeks ago.
Strydom controlled the race beautifully as he allowed Katy's Lane to idle along in midfield, racing three wide, and about six lengths off the leader Pascal Moon. Amur Affair was being restrained and was racing towards the rear of the field as they turned for home.
With 400m left to go, Katy's Lane was still cruising midfield at a pedestrian pace, before Strydom gave her two reminders, asking her to lift. The filly immediately changed gears to kick clear effortlessly.
By the time the line flashed by she was well clear with Strydom already easing her down. Katy's Lane won by 1.25L from Upthemoon in second. Amur Affair came flying up from the rear of the field to finish third a further 0.75L back, with Extra Zero in fourth.
The three year-old filly has now won her last four starts and looks a very exciting prospect for the future.
Bred by Cheveley Stud out of the Lustra mare Beautiful Piper, Katy's Lane recorded her fourth win from five starts for owners Messrs D Bothma and FC Bothma and Mr K P and Mrs N M Backos.
