Latharnach given Goodwood aim

3 minute read

Latharnach is to be kept at a mile for the Qatar Thoroughbred Stakes at Glorious Goodwood following his fine effort in defeat at Royal Ascot.

The Group Three on July 31 represents a sizeable drop in class for the three-year-old, who finished second behind Gleneagles in the St James's Palace Stakes at Ascot.

Trainer Charlie Appleby said: "We were delighted with Latharnach at Royal Ascot. We decided to drop him out to try pick up the pieces behind Gleneagles and he saw the trip out well."

He went on: "They didn't go a mad gallop at Ascot, but he finished the race well. On official ratings he had a bit to do, but I was confident he would be competitive.

"His target is likely to be the Thoroughbred Stakes at Goodwood now. I thought we might give the Sussex Stakes a swerve, as I never put him in it and it was a large supplementary fee to go for it.

"We have always liked the horse and we wanted to run him in a Guineas trial, but he just didn't come to hand quick enough.

"He is a big horse who will step up again as a four-year-old."
