Moonlight Magic Dazzles Jim Bolger At Leopardstown

3 minute read

Moonlight Magic supplemented his debut success just eight days ago when he came with an irresistible late to run to take Listed spoils in the Best Odds Guaranteed For Tote Account Holders Eyrefield Stakes at Leopardstown.

Trainer Jim Bolger decided to turn the Cape Cross colt out again quickly to give him more experience and it paid off as Moonlight Magic (5-1) appreciated the nine furlongs.

Landofhopeandglory was soon at the head of affairs and made a gallant attempt to collect, but Kevin Manning was patient on Moonlight Magic until unleashing him on the outside.

Getting on top in the last 100 yards, he went on to score by three-quarters of a length to give the trainer and jockey a double following Theodorico's win in the nursery.

Paddy Power were impressed and cut Moonlight Magic to 20-1 from 33s for the Investec Derby.

"He's a good horse. He was a little bit backward and just made it this year," said Bolger.

"I'd say he'll improve a lot over the winter and hopefully he'll be back here for the Derrinstown Derby Trial.

"He did it very well the first day but when he hit the front he idled."

Bolger was happy with the third-placed Leafy Shade.

He said: "That was a big step up on where she was the last time.

"She's a good horse and will hopefully be an Oaks filly."
