Spud set to chase Welsh National honours at Chepstow

3 minute read

Chase The Spud is likely to be Fergal O'Brien's only runner in the Coral Welsh Grand National at Chepstow on December 27.

The nine-year-old booked his place in the valuable staying handicap chase when making a winning reappearance on heavy ground at Haydock last month.

O'Brien reports Chase The Spud to have taken those exertions well and is looking forward to sending him across the Severn Bridge for the big race.

Stablemates Perfect Candidate, Viva Steve and Alvarado also hold entries, but they are unlikely to accompany Chase The Spud, with Alvarado a possible for a three-and-a-quarter mile handicap chase at Doncaster on Friday.

"Chase The Spud did very well first time out for us. The plan will be to go to Chepstow for the Welsh National," said the Naunton handler.

"He's come out of the race really well. We're very happy with him, so it's fingers crossed.

"He'll more than likely be our only runner in the race."
