Hardy four-year-old stays strong to take Chartwell Fillies’ Stakes

Tomyris made a successful seasonal debut in the Group Three Betfred ‘Supports Jack Berry House’ Chartwell Fillies’ Stakes at Lingfield.

A Listed winner last term, Roger Varian’s charge showed she could go higher this term as she beat a decent field in good style.

Delivered on the outside by Frankie Dettori, the 9-2 shot showed a nice turn of foot to get home by half a length from long-time leader Lincoln Rocks. Tajaanus was third.

Dettori said: “Roger told me seven (furlongs) was her ideal trip.

“She quickened and travelled well.”

Varian told ITV Racing: “She’s worked well all spring and we thought she was a nice filly last year, twice placed at Group Three level.

“The team at Hesmonds Stud have done a great job with the filly over the winter.

“She’s justified the call to keep her in training, winning a Group Three.

“Hopefully she can go on to bigger and better things.”

The Newmarket handler added: “She travelled well through the race and quickened up well. Frankie was very complimentary about her.

“She is in the Group Two at Ascot (Duke Of Cambridge) and I think it’s likely we will go there but it’s to be confirmed.”
