Denis O’Regan became the first jockey to ride a winner at every UK and Irish National Hunt racecourse when guiding Fiveonefive to victory at Hereford on Monday afternoon.
The Irish veteran had gone 28 rides without a winner at the track but successfully got the job done on Fiveonefive this afternoon. The Cian Collins-trained 8/15 market leader travelled kindly throughout and stayed on well in the closing stages to get the better of Johnny Blue by a length and three-quarters.
O'Regan, who has enjoyed plenty of high-profile days in the saddle – including wins on Tidal Bay [2008 Arkle Trophy] and Inglis Drever [2008 World Hurdle] – was understandably proud of his achievement.
Speaking on Sky Sports Racing, he said: "It's lovely and it's a personal achievement,"
"I have no idea if anyone has done it before or not, but it matters to me."
O'Regan had his first ride back following an injury yesterday at Cork and was quick to praise those who have helped him throughout his road to recovery.
"I'm only back from injury yesterday, I had 14 weeks off and I have a couple of thanks to say to my physios and they were all very good helping me get back which was brilliant, and my boys and wife are at home watching so it's great.
"It's probably a huge achievement for myself, it's taken a lot of hard work and a lot of years riding in different places and different jobs.
"A lot of people supported me last year trying to get it and it didn't quite work out. Gordon Elliot, Cian [Collins] again, there were different trainers all helping me out.
"Today was a lucky day, I had a good feeling about it, and I'm delighted it has come off."
