Thunderbird One didn’t lift off when we tipped him up last time but he’s “a go” at Flemington on Saturday.

Winter Championships At Flemington Picture: Racing and Sports

As we mentioned last time Thunderbird One came across the Tasman well-handicapped on his best form and took advantage at Sale, winning well without having to run right to this best.

A rise in the official handicap of 1.5kgs should hardly be enough to stop him winning more races and while this heat of the Winter Championship is typically competitive he looks as good a chance as any of taking the prize.

The price on offer in early markets looks well worth a gamble.

In the same race the lightly raced Akavoroun comes up as the early favourite but he looks one best steered clear of at the current odds.

He’s the horse here with most upside, and that is to be respected, but he seemingly had his chance in a race of less depth last time and will need to be taking a good step forward to be winning today.

In the last the talented Nautical gets her chance to cash in after making a pleasing return last time.

She was as good as ever at the Valley first-up, running figures that would see her come here with a genuine favourite’s chance.

Sinhala ran good figures last time as well, bashing a modest line-up at Sandown, and running for a yard very much in-form she must be respected.
