Sydney Specials: Rosehill – August 12

3 minute read

Rosehill on Saturday boasts a strong nine race card with a number of enticing wagering prospects.

One of them comes early on in the program with Vaucluse Bay contesting the Fairfield RSL Club Benchmark 80 Handicap (2000m).

Vaucluse Bay is searching for a third straight success at this course following a dominant victory against the older horses over this trip a fortnight ago.

The son of Al Maher put four lengths on his nearest rival in what can be considered something of a breakout performance.

He returns to the scene of the crime and is understandably favourite with Chris Waller placing the four-year-old beautifully, dropping him back from a Benchmark 85 to a Benchmark 80.

Vaucluse Bay’s two perceived dangers according to the market in Zourkhan and Magical Stance were beaten decisively by him last start.

The race as a whole is largely comprised of limited middle distance types whereas Vaucluse Bay currently profiles as a horse on the rise.

The case for Vaucluse Bay can be solidified further when looking at who he beat at Rosehill two starts ago, Arbeitsam, who was an impressive winner a fortnight ago at Rosehill when dropping back from 1800m to 1400m.

We turn to The Rosebud for the Each Way Play which comes in the form of Trekking.

The colt showed an abundance of promise through his two-year-old season where he raced three times.

His maiden campaign produced a debut win at Rosehill in the summer before coming back and running second on resuming in the Group 3 Black Opal Stakes (1200m).

The son of Street Cry was then thrown in the deep end of the Golden Slipper where he finished down the track.

It was likely a case of too much too soon for Trekking who has since returned with an impressive trial win over 735m at Randwick.

Of those around him in the market, topweights (Diamond Tathagata and Menari) in The Rosebud have a horrible record with just one winning (Thronum) since The Rosebud's inception in 2010.

Siege Of Quebec is an impressive colt however dropping back from 1400m to 1100m is a major query.

Trekking brings a nice profile into the contest and the each way odds about him as third favourite for the event are worth plenty of thought.
