It's back to Flemington this weekend for a deep meeting that hopefully throws up a couple of interesting betting opportunities.
Our best bet comes up in Race Four and it's one that we arrive at by process of elimination.
Silvera is a horse with more to offer. His rivals on Saturday have very little left to offer by our thinking.
Silvera was turned over at Cranbourne as a 7-4 favourite last time but the winner there Linguist is handy and the form looks at least as valuable as the Jaminzah/Quick Defence/Balcazar formline.
Silvera was second up there. So was Curragh behind him and Spanner Head was third up and may be fitter but they concede both prior and outcome to Silvera.
Second Bullet is a good horse but he's not getting better and is probably getting worse.
All in all, Silvera is the one in the field that looks likely to run a better race in the future than he has in the past and that makes him an appealing gamble.
For an each way play we roll onto race five. Labuan Star was left with too much to do in Adelaide last time but ran solid closing splits and the fresh run has her looking very dangerous here.
1000m is on the short side potentially but there is good pace engaged so we can expect an end-to-end gallop and that gives her a chance to assert herself late in the piece.
THE MELBOURNE MAIL
Bet Of The Day: Race 4 #5 Silvera @ $3.20
Each Way Play: Race 5 #7 Labuan Star @ $7.00
