Vancouver wins 2014 Nsw T’bred Breeders’ Plate Listed $100,000 at Randwick (NSW) 2yo Colts & Geldings, 1000m.
The Gai Waterhouse-trained colt Vancouver began quite well and soon drove through to take the lead. He then went along at a good tempo and fought back gamely when challenged by the favourite Sooboog at the 300m. He then drew clear again in the closing stages for a smart win in good time (57.58). Sooboog worked a bit in the early stages from barrier seven before settling outside the leader Vancouver. He moved up well passing the 300m looking a real threat, but he found the winner a bit too strong from the 100m and then battled on quite well for second, beaten just over a length.
Wolf Cry did not show a lot of early pace and settled about seventh, between runners. He switched out nearing the 300m and ran on soundly for a good third, looking suited to further.
Last Witness showed pace and raced in third place until half-way down the straight and held on quite well for an encouraging (3.3 lengths) fourth.
The Chris Waller-trained colt Stimac missed the start and was a clear last in the early stages. He improved to eighth on the rails at the 600m, fanned deep on straightening and made up good ground to finish (3.5 lengths) fifth in a very promising debut.
Larrikan Princewas last at the home turn, went to the centre of the track on turning for home and made good late ground for (5.1 lengths) sixth, putting up a nice effort.
