Fontein Ruby wins 2014 Racing.Com Caulfield Classic Group 3 $750,000 at Caulfield (VIC) 3yo, 2000m.
Fontein Ruby was smartly away from her outside barrier (13) and settled nicely outside the leader Merion, travelled at a reasonable tempo (1st 1400m 1:26.59). She took the lead on turning for home, was headed at the 200m but fought back gamely to score a gutsy neck win at the post.
Crafty settled near last, one off the rails. She commenced a move (three wide with cover) from the 600m, fanned deep on straightening and challenged strongly at the 100m. She then fought on well for a sound second, beaten a neck.
Firehouse Rock was eighth one off the rails before improving (wide) from the 600m. He put in a quick run once into the straight and took a narrow lead at the 200m but then tired on that effort to finish third, beaten one length.
Light Up Manhattan settled well in sixth place, one off the rails. He looked for a run in the centre at turn and got clear running from the 200m before battling on for (1.9 lengths) fourth.
Magicool was fifth on the rails, was shuffled back nearing the home turn before getting a split at the 300m and the
fought on for (2.9 lengths) fifth.The favourite Kumaon was second last on the rails, was checked at the 600m but still raced well below his best, failing to make any ground to finish last, beaten 17 lengths.
