Shining Knight wins 2014 Toll-Colonel Reeves Stakes Group 3 $150,000 at Ascot (WA) 3yo+, 1100m.
A surprise result with the highly regarded Smoko ($1.80 fav) weakening to finish sixth. The race was taken out by the second favourite Shining Knight who raced in a good spot, fifth on the rails, until nearing the home turn. He switched out nicely on straightening, sprinted quickly to take the lead at the 200m and then went on to win well by a length in a good first-up effort.
Testamezzo went back from his wide barrier (10) and was second last in the 12-horse field to the turn. He saved ground along the rails at the turn, switched across heels at the 200m and then ran on well, just getting up in time to take second.
Hussy By Choice was fourth, one out and one back, moved up well rounding the home turn, challenged at the 200m and then battled on well for a sound (length) third while Smoko led the field until half-way down the straight before tiring in the latter stages for (3.2 lengths) sixth, racing below his best form.
