Pop Culture wins 2014 Ascot Gold Cup Listed $100,000 at Ascot (WA) 3yo+, 1800m.
Outsider Pop Culture scored a surprise win putting up an improved run at her third start this preparation. She settled nicely in eighth place, one off the rails, following a good pace (1st 1200m 1:14.10) before commencing a three wide move approaching the home turn. She put in a strong run to challenge at the 200m and then finished well to score by three quarters of a length.
Rebelson went straight to the lead and ran along at a good pace. He fought back well when challenged in the straight, holding on for a good second.
Fancy Feet was handily placed in fourth place, one out and one back, moved up at the home turn and fought on well in the straight for a close-up third.
The favourite Son Of Something, a winner of his last two starts, settled a long way back being second last in the
16-horse field. He looked to improve wide with cover coming to the turn and made late ground, without threatening, to finish (4 lengths) eighth.
