Bass Strait wins 2014 R.J. Peters Stakes Group 3 $150,000 at Ascot (WA) 3yo+, 1500m.
Former Victorian-trained Bass Strait having his second WA start, settled in a perfect spot, one out and one back. He moved up well nearing the home turn, challenged shortly after turning for home, got to the front at the 100m and battled strongly to score by a long neck.
Respondent was seventh, between runners, got a split at the 300m, challenged at the 100m and then battled strongly for second.
Trading Day settled nicely outside the leader, got to the front at the 150m and fought on well for a close third.
The favourite Black Heart Bart raced behind the leader but travelled a bit keenly in stages due to the average early pace. He was under pressure on turning for home and kept battling from that point to finish fourth, beaten a length.
