Mahuta wins 2015 Carbine Club Stakes Group 3 $200,000 at Flemington (VIC) 3yo, 1600m.
Mahuta was into the lead from the jump but soon allowed Takedown to take over in the first 200 metres. Along with Bassett, these three broke clear by six lengths heading down the back straight. At the 1000m, Mahuta first hugged the rails in third and, to ensure clear running, then moved off the rails approaching the home straight. With good momentum, Mahuta dashed clear at the 300m, daring those behind to challenge, and kept up a solid gallop, fighting off the fast finish of Patch Adams and the battling Bassett right to the line for a nice win.
Patch Adams was among the tail enders until the turn and had to thread his way through the field and lunged to grab second at the post.
Bassett tracked the pacemaker to the turn but was unable to go with Mahuta when they straightened and had to battle the length of the straight, just losing second on the line for a fighting third.
