Pepper Mill wins 2016 Speights Great Easter Stakes Listed NZ$50,000 at Riccarton Park (NZ), 1400m.
Pepper Mill was wide but handy early from his barrier six then found cover, one out and one back around the big bend. Rider Lisa Allpress moved the gelding further off the rail approaching the last corner and had great sight of the run home. Straightening, he levelled up four wide to challenge - all four looking likely but gradually Allpress extracted the needed effort but was all out to hold on at the finish. It was Allpress’s fourth winner on the day.
Overtheriver lay second, one off the fence passing the 1000m. He tried to go with the leader (Seize The Moment) but seemed flat footed as they turned for home and battling at the 200m then ground away over the last bit to finally gain a tough second on the line.
Seize The Moment led round the bend and was going comfortably when they straightened but could not break away yet battled strongly the length of the straight for a hard fought third.
