Storming The Tower wins 2016 Rotorua Cup Group 3 NZ$75,000 at Arawa Park (NZ), 2200m.
Capping a consistent run of form, Storming The Tower took up a handy spot in behind the leaders and with a round to go sat fourth, one out and one back - the field racing three and four widths from the fence for a better going. Down the back straight he remained in fourth while the leader (Chop Suey) tried to make a break. Starting the home bend rider Vinnie Colgan moved closer and passing the 600m claimed third and was in behind Authentic Paddy, who took over soon after. Into the straight, Storming The Tower ranged up to the leader then edged clear but only narrowly as top-weight Authentic Paddy would not lie down. In the shadows of the post the weight told and Storming The Tower was able to hold on by a neck.
Gentil Tonton was well back early but found room on the home bend to improve and was the widest turning in. He got up alongside the winner into the straight but despite a good battle could not overhaul the winner, nabbing Authentic Paddy for third on the line.
Authentic Paddy was handy around the home bend and took the lead just before straightening. He gave plenty but his top weight was the difference over the last 50 metres.
