Ruthven wins 2017 Qld Derby Group 1 $600,000 at Doomben (QLD), 2200m.
The Ciaron Maher-trained colt Ruthven was most impressive in winning here. Having his first run since second in the SA Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) at Morphettville on 13 May, he settled nicely for Hugh Bowman in fourth place before moving up (three wide) from the 700m. He took the lead at the home turn and then raced clear to score impressively in a strong staying effort.
Rockstar Rebel raced back in eighth place before tracking up (wide with cover) nearing the 600m. He went to second at the 200m and kept fighting on well to hold that position, although having no chance with the winner.
Ana Royale raced back in tenth place, made a wide move at the 600m, was a distant fifth at the 200m and kept running on well to take the minor placing.
Violate raced in fifth place, on the rails, and kept battling on for (5.9 lengths) fourth while Shocking Luck raced in eighth place but was under pressure at the home turn and disappointed in finishing (9.8 lengths) 11th.
