Crown Witness wins 2017 Quezette Stakes Group 3 $150,000 at Caulfield (VIC), 1100m.
Although in receipt of two kilograms from the favourite Catchy, Crown Witness fought hard in the closing stages to maintain her unbeaten record in three starts. Under rider Ben Melham and from the outside stall (9), she bounced out well to lead or co-lead early, dropping back to sit a half length off the lead from the 800m to the straight where Melham gave her a shake and they took over narrowly inside the 200m. Fighting hard, she gave her best to the line to score gamely by a head.
Catchy was one out in fifth past the 800m, ran up five wide approaching the last corner, challenged at the 250m and chased the winner hard but could not quite bridge the gap, going under narrowly.
Ploverset hugged the fence in fourth into the straight, had a clear run to the line and fought well for third without looking like a winner from She's So High, who flashed into fourth after turning for home with two behind her.
