Ulmann wins 2017 Moonga Stakes Group 3 $150,000 at Caulfield (VIC), 1400m.
In a Darren Weir-trained quinella Ulmann, who was having his second start this preparation, scored a good win. He settled nicely in fifth place, on the rails, tracking a good tempo before improving behind the leaders on straightening, he challenged at the 200m and finished a bit too well to win by just under a length.
His stablemate Burning Front raced outside the leader (Savile Row) challenged nearing the home turn and after going to the front at the 200m and then fought gamely for a good second after working in the early stages.
Wyong-trained Echo Effect settled in eighth place, made an early move (deep) approaching the 600m, challenged (three wide) at the home turn and then held on really well for a very good third after his early efforts at his first start in Victoria.
The favourite Grande Rosso raced in sixth place (one off the rails), was under pressure at the home turn and kept battling on in the straight for (2.1 lengths) fourth, without looking dangerous.
