Savapinski wins 2017 7news Matriarch Stakes Group 2 $300,000 at Flemington (VIC), 2000m.
Progressive mare Savapinski has now gone from winning a Class 2 (1600m) at Hawkesbury on 21 September at her fourth race start to take out this Group Two race three runs later. She worked from her outside barrier (11) to take the lead and then ran along at a good tempo. She grabbed a break on straightening and then fought back strongly for a good win, running the 2000m out well in an impressive effort.
Payroll raced in last place in the 11-horse field, got between runners rounding the home turn, switched into clear running at the 400m and ran on well for a good second, without looking likely to trouble the winner.
Token Of Love led in the early stages before tracking the front-running Savapinski. She moved up to that mare nearing the home turn and then kept battling on soundly in the straight to take the minor placing.
Prompt Response had a good trip in fifth place, moved up at the 300m and then kept fighting on to finish (4.3 lengths) fourth, seemingly tested by the 2000m over the latter stages.
Heaven’s Above raced near the tail of the field, tracked up (three wide with cover) from the 800m. Put in a run on turning for home and kept battling on quite well, without threatening, to finish (4.6 lengths) fifth.
