2017 Magic Millions B.J. McLachlan Group 3 December 30 - Doomben

3 minute read

Meryl wins 2017 Magic Millions B.J. McLachlan Group 3 $200,000 at Doomben (QLD), 1200m.

Lee Curtis-trained filly Meryl resumed after her debut sixth in the Gimcrack Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Randwick on 30 September to score a smart first up win. She settled in fifth place on the rails from her inside barrier (1), tracking a smart tempo (first 600m 34.51) before improving on the inner at the home turn. She switched out on passing the 200m, hit the front at the 50m and went on to win well.

Hopes Eternal did not show any early pace and settled in last place in the 11-horse field. She improved along the rails nearing the 600m, switched deeper to be eighth coming to the home turn, challenged at the 100m and fought on well for a very good second.

Witherspoon was quickly away and went to the front. She then travelled well despite some early pressure, got a break at the 200m and then battled on well for a good third after a taxing trip in the lead.

Equal favourite Orcein again did not show much early pace and settled in eighth place, on the rails. He improved along the inner to be fifth coming to the home turn, was in a challenging position at the 200m and then kept battling on for (1.8 lengths) fourth while the other co-favourite Crockett drifted back to settle in seventh place (and deep).

He raced greenly, losing ground at the home turn and then made some ground for (4.7 lengths) seventh, without threatening.
