Scott Base wins 2018 Karaka Million 3yo Classic Listed NZ$1,000,000 at Ellerslie (NZ), 1600m.
Scott Base out-finished a top field from well back for win three from 10 starts. He was one of the last few when they settled, away from the fence but with only three or four behind him at the 1200m. Jockey Rosie Myers urged him forward at the 700m and they improved two and three wide to be handier yet still with much to do.
Midfield into the straight Myers pulled wider for a run and the gelding grabbed the bit and went after the leaders, lengthened stride inside the 100m, collared the new leader at the 50m and was travelling best at the line to score by a neck.
Embellish, the favourite, was fifth at the 500m, ran up to challenge once into the straight and looked a definite winner. Racing greenly, he wobbled a little, balanced at the 150m but didn't see the winner flash past until it was too late.
Savvy Coup tracked Embellish into the straight, seemed flat but found more late to finish fourth but promoted to third after an enquiry.
Kapoor struck heavy interference at the 300m but recovered well to finish fifth yet promoted to fourth after the enquiry, brought about when Ever Loyal ran out hampering several runners and was relegated from third to fifth.
