Waller Tightens NSW Hold

3 minute read

Chris Waller has all but wrapped up back-to-back Sydney trainers' titles, and now he's poised to take the outright lead in the NSW premiership race

The Rosehill trainer has spent all of June eroding Gai Waterhouse's commanding lead in NSW, and seven wins last week slashed the gap to just 1 ½ wins.

Waterhouse, who is currently overseas preparing for the wedding of her daughter Kate, didn't enjoy a single winner last week.

She remains on 146 victories in NSW for the year with Waller at 144 ½. And Waller's full-scale offensive to land the NSW-Sydney premiership double continues at Canterbury on Wednesday with an arsenal of 13 runners accepted at the meeting.

Waterhouse only has two running tomorrow – the highly rated Rex Is A Star who was beaten by Waller juvenile Catkins on debut in January, and resuming two-year-old Dormello.

If things fall his way Waller could leapfrog Australia's leading lady into the NSW lead and burn further clear through Saturday's Rosehill meeting where he'll be armed with an even bigger team.

Waterhouse's sole nomination at Rosehill this weekend is St Beune.
