Umatain Scores Tough Win At Canterbury

3 minute read

A well judged ride by Nash Rawiller has seen Umatain collect her second win from as many starts in the Tab Sportsbet f&m benchmark 75 handicap (1900m) at Canterbury today.

The Clinton McDonald-trained runner jumped well from barrier six and was up on the speed early along with My Highlight, who would not go away throughout the race, urging Umatain along until she sprinted clear at the top of the straight.

Well backed late on course into $2.80, Umatain appeared to have the race all sewn up, until the Queanbeyan trained galloper Money Never Sleeps came with a booming run down the centre of the track.

Money Never Sleeps looked a certain winner at the 200m until Umatain kicked again to claim a tough 0.8L win over Money Never Sleeps in second and I Walk The Line running on well for third.

Rawiller judged the ride perfectly and said he was never worried when unable to get an easy time in front throughout the race.

“She is a pretty tough on pace runner, I was always dictating her and she wasn't dictating to me so it all worked out well,” said Rawiller.

“The way the race was run made her a little bit vulnerable over the last 50m but she is astough as nails,” he added.

“Full credit should go to Clinton for bringing her up from Melbourne, he has found a couple nice races for her and he deserves the good prizemoney.”

Umatain kicked off her preparation in Victoria with three average runs before showing plenty of improvement when running second at Caulfield, followed up by a last start win at Canterbury.
