Boom Kiwi colt Cauthen is set to make his Australian debut next week.
Trainer Andrew Campbell is considering a start in BM 78 race over 1000m at Moonee Valley on August 3 for the exciting colt.
Cauthen was immediately set for a spring campaign in Melbourne after an eight lengths win over 1200m at Te Rapa on July 3.
However it was only a midweek event and as Cauthen is well down the order of entry for the $125,000 Vain Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on August 17 Campbel needs to give the colt the chance to build some extra prizemoney.
“Our biggest concern is making the field for the Vain,” said Campbell, who has had previous success in Melbourne with Lord Tavistock.
“Tavistock went over there as a one-win horse with very little prizemoney and he made the Vain.
“Cauthen's done so well and we've kept the work up to him that we may possibly kick him off at the Valley on August 3.”
Cauthen arrived in Australia on Wednesday night and will be based at Peter Morgan's Whittlesea property for a campaign aimed at the $1 million Caulfield Guineas on October 12.
“We've always thought he was a great horse and his debut proved that,” Campbell said.
“He ran a second faster than the other two-year-old race on the day and was really untouched.
“We've always had this campaign in mind with him and he's really come through his first start well.”
Cauthen wil also bring recent stable acquisition Weissmuller to Melbourne for the spring.
A G3 winner over 1600m at his third start, Weissmuller may run over 1400m at Flemington on August 10.
