Dunaden Heads International Charge In Cup Noms

3 minute read

Twenty-eight internationals have been nominated for this year's $6.2m Melbourne Cup, 20 years after Vintage Crop became the first overseas raider to contest Australia's richest horse race.

French stayer Dunaden, who won the race in 2011, headlines the overseas contingent which for the first time makes up more than 20 per cent of total nominations.

He's joined in the list by Green Moon as the only two past winners of the race.

Irish master Aidan O'Brien has nominated three gallopers – Ernest Hemingway, Foundry and Leading Light.

Luca Cumani looks set to return with Mount Athos while Dermot Weld, who trained Vintage Crop to an historic race victory in 1993, could be represented by Pale Mimosa and Voleuse De Coeurs.

Prominent Australian owner Lloyd Williams has 12 nominated with prominent duo Sea Moon and Masked Marvel potentially joining Green Moon in the race.

Cup favourite Puissance de Lune is Darren Weir's sole entry in the race.

Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse has 10 entries headed by last year's runner-up Fiorente, as she looks to win the race for the first time.

Australian Oaks winner Royal Descent is one of eight representing the Chris Waller yard while Cups master Bart Cummings will be solely represented by Precedence.

Weights for the Melbourne Cup will be released on Tuesday, September 17.
