UBET Race Preview: The 2017 BMW

3 minute read

The 2017 BMW will be held at Rosehill on Saturday with the Group 1 weight-for-age event able to boast being one of the top staying races in the country.

Since becoming a Group 1 race in 1980, The BMW has attracted some of the very best Australia has had to offer, with Kingston Town winning in 1980, Might And Power lifting the trophy in 1998, and Makybe Diva claiming The BMW back in 2005.

Last year’s winner was Preferment, but a new winner will be crowned this season as the small field of nine prepares to do battle at Rosehill on Saturday.

The favourite for the event is Our Ivanhowe at $4, as the seven-year-old comes off a fine win in the Ranvet last weekend, with the Freedman-trained runner looking to become the seventh since 1995 to complete the Ranvet-BMW double.

Humidor, Tavago and Jameka all closely follow Our Ivanhowe at $4.40, with Humidor heading into the race in the hottest form, after winning the Australian Cup last start and finishing second in his two starts before that.

Following a spell after a disappointing spring, Tavago resumed with a fifth in the Chipping Norton Stakes at Randwick and last start won the Sky High Stakes at Rosehill, while last year’s Caulfield Cup winner Jameka comes off a second to Humidor in the Australian Cup earlier this month.

Exospheric rounds out the top five, after a third place finish in the Australian Cup sees him enter the race at $8.50 for the win and $2.45 for a place.

Who Shot Thebarman remains an outside chance at $16 on Saturday, as the eight-year-old has strong form in this race after finishing fourth in 2015 and last time out.
