Tigers-Magpies AFLW clash halted by lightning

3 minute read

Richmond held a 14-point lead over Collingwood in their AFLW encounter at Punt Road when play was delayed because of lightning in the area.

Lightning has delayed the start of the third quarter in the AFLW match between Richmond and Collingwood at Punt Road.

Rain began falling heavily during the half-time break on Saturday and lightning flashes nearby were cause for concern among league officials.

The match was initially delayed for 15 minutes, before officials decided it would be put off indefinitely.

Richmond led 3.3 to 1.1 at half-time, with Ellie McKenzie outstanding.

McKenzie kicked two goals from eight disposals in the first half, while Collingwood's Lauren Butler marked her long-awaited return from injury with a goal.

The Tigers went through an equally bizarre situation last year when a snake on the field delayed the start of a clash with GWS at Blacktown.

The start of the Magpies' semi-final clash with Adelaide in November 2022 was delayed because of lightning.
