Yashasvi Jaiswal's wasteful run-out within sight of his century means Australia firmly hold the whip hand after two eventful days in the Boxing Day Test.
AUSTRALIA V INDIA: Day two of the Boxing Day Test at the MCG:
SCORE: Australia 474, India 5-164
SUMMARY: Australia resumed at 6-311 and Steve Smith continued his late-career revival, top-scoring with 140. He put on 112 for the seventh wicket with Pat Cummins (49), adding crucial meat to the bones. Captain Rohit Sharma's return to opening failed badly when was dismissed for three, but after Cummins also removed the in-form KL Rahul (25) at tea, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli went to work. Jaiswal was on 82 and set for a ton when he went for a quick single and Kohli refused to budge from the non-striker's end. Scott Boland had Kohli caught behind moments later to confirm Australia are in the box seat.
THE MOMENT: Jaiswal and Kohli had put on 102 for the third wicket and looked set like a jelly. A run-out was probably the only way for Australia to break their stand, but the Indians gifted it to the home side, with Jaiswal attempting his ambitious single and Kohli vetoing the idea.
THE PLAYER: Australia's day one at the MCG was solid enough, but they needed Smith to build on his overnight 68. He did so magnificently for his 34th Test ton, following on from his Brisbane century to quash any adverse commentary about his form.
THE STATS: Indian ace Jasprit Bumrah took 4-99 - one short of his first Test "reverse ton". Remarkably, it is the first time in his 44 Tests he has conceded more than 90 in an innings. Also, Friday's crowd of 85,147 is a record for day two at a Boxing Day Test.
