The BBL clash between the Sydney Thunder and Hobart Hurricanes has been abandoned without a ball being bowled.
The Sydney Thunder and Hobart Hurricanes have each been denied the chance to move atop the Big Bash League ladder after rain washed out their clash at ENGIE Stadium.
Showers fell on Sydney throughout Wednesday and meant play never got underway, with the bat flip delayed and heavier covers coming on.
At 8.20pm, a little more than an hour after play was due to begin, the match became the second this season to be abandoned without a ball being bowled.
The second-placed Thunder and third-placed Hurricanes each receive one competition point and are on level pegging with the Sydney Sixers, who hold top spot with a superior net run rate.
Sam Konstas was due to make his return from Test duties and open the batting for the Thunder alongside David Warner.
The teenage sensation is set to play three more games this BBL season, with a likely call-up to the Test tour of Sri Lanka set to rule him out of contention for the finals.
Paceman Nathan McAndrew was also in the frame for a return from his shoulder injury for the injury-hit Thunder.
The Hurricanes had been aiming for a fifth consecutive win in what was the first carbon-neutral fixture in BBL history.
The Thunder partnered with a solar farm in India and a regenerative farming project to offset the carbon emitted by the fixture, with those plans going ahead despite the absence of gameplay.
In positive news for the Thunder, allrounder Daniel Sams has flown back from Perth following his horror head clash that hospitalised him and teammate Cameron Bancroft.
He was at the ground to watch Wednesday's game but cannot return from concussion protocols until the clash with the Sydney Sixers on January 17 at the earliest.
