Firebirds beat Fever in netball thriller

3 minute read

The Queensland Firebirds are well in the hunt for a finals finish after posting their fourth win on the trot in the trans-Tasman netball championship.

The Queensland Firebirds notched their fourth trans-Tasman win on the trot with a thrilling 56-55 netball triumph over West Coast Fever in Perth on Sunday.

In a see-sawing final term, two crucial intercepts to Firebirds goalkeeper Laura Geitz proved the difference, helping the visitors escape with a narrow victory.

Firebirds goalshooter Romelda Aiken nailed 30 goals from 32 attempts, while goal attack Natalie Medhurst (26 of 33) was also crucial in the victory.

For the Fever, Caitlin Basset scored 33 goals from 36 attempts, but the radar of Catherine Cox (22 of 32) was slightly off.

The win was Queensland's first against an Australian opponent this season, and lifts the defending champions to a 5-4 record.

The Firebirds entered the match on the back of wins against New Zealand opponents the Mystics, Tactix and Steel.

But their record against Australian teams had been 0-4 before their triumph over the Fever, who remain mired near the bottom of the table with just two wins from nine games.

The Firebirds will be aiming to continue their impressive run when they take on NSW Swifts in Brisbane on June 3.
