Former Socceroos goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer will have a greater say in the direction of football in Australia after being appointed to an FA advisory panel.
After becoming one of Football Australia's most prominent critics in retirement, Socceroos great Mark Schwarzer is set to form part of the governing body's panel of experts on the game's direction.
Schwarzer on Thursday was named as one of three new additions to FA's football development committee alongside ex-Matildas defender Di Alaglich and Anthony Crea, a respected conditioner who has spent time with several A-League clubs.
The panel is chaired by former Matilda Heather Garriock and also contains FA chief executive James Johnson and FA board member Sam Ciccarello.
It provides guidance on a wide range of matters such as national teams, player development and junior football, but will not have a direct say in the appointment of the next Matildas coach.
Schwarzer's involvement is particularly noteworthy. The ex-goalkeeper has frequently used his position as a pundit for Optus Sport to hold FA to account on matters such as the cost of registration fees and its governance.
"I am honoured to be part of the football development committee and contribute to the ongoing growth of football in Australia," Schwarzer said in a statement.
"I look forward to working with the committee and sharing my experiences to help guide the next generation of Australian footballers."
Johnson was full of praise for the three appointees.
"Mark's legacy as one of Australia's greatest goalkeepers, Di's contribution to the women's game, and Anthony's high-performance and sports science expertise will play a key role as we continue to build on the success of our national teams and strengthen the game across the Australian football landscape," he said.
