3 minute read

Peeping has claimed her first Group 1 success when taking out the Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

Settling in a perfect spot around midfield, Peeping set out after the leader at the 300m, taking the lead inside the final 50m for a narrow win over Azkadellia, with Solicit third.

The Ron Quinton-trained runner returned a peak Timeform figure of 114, two pounds higher than her win in the Group 2 Golden Pendant in the spring.

The four-year-old mare who also gave jockey Sam Clipperton his first Group 1 success returned a figure four pounds higher than 2015 winner Plucky Belle and four pounds below 2014 winner Steps In Time.

The daughter of Redoute’s Choice ran to the same number as former stablemate Ofcourseican who claimed victory in 2012.

Nominated for the Queen Of The Turf next month, Peeping still has some question marks over running a strong 1600m which is the same path Quinton took with Ofcourseican.

The Racing and Sports field strength value RSFS was equal to that of the 2015 renewal and slightly below that of the 2014 running.

Running out the 1500m in 1:27.53 well inside race par, Peeping ran the last 600m in 34.31.

Second placegetter Azkadellia returned a figure of 111, only one pound below his peak of 112, achieved when running third in the Myer Classic in the Spring.

Other notable performances came from third placegetter Solicit who ran to a new peak of 116 with the 56kg and Lucia Valentina who looks set for a big campaign running into fourth first up.

It’s Somewhat returned to the winners circle with victory in the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) settling off the pace before moving up the leader on the turn and holding off Excess Knowledge and Dances On Stars over the concluding stages.

The John O’Shea-trained runner, ridden by Sam Clipperton returned a Timeform figure of 118, one pound below his third placing in the Villiers three starts back and will need to improve again if he is to measure up in Group 1 company.

The RSFS was on par for a Group 2 race and well above that of the 2015 renewal taken out by Burbero ran to 111 and slightly above the 2014 renewal taken out by Messene (119).

Second placegetter Excess Knowledge put in a terrific effort, returning a career peak Timeform figure of 118, four pounds above his win in the Lexus Stakes in the spring.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained runner will more than likely look towards the Group 1 Doncaster Handicap (1600m) although he will need to improve significantly off this effort to be any sort of a chance.

The lowest rated winner of the Doncaster in recent times is Sacred Choice (120) with 2015 winner Kermadec returning a figure of 124.

Calliope Picture: Racing and Sports

Of the two-year-olds Calliope made her way into the Golden Slipper after taking out the Magic Night Stakes narrowly with Omei Sword second and Twist Tops third.

Calliope returned a Career peak figure of 109p which puts her thereabouts but still well below the fancied chances such as Extreme Chouce and Kiss And Make Up.

2015 winner Speak Fondly ran to 106 in the same race and like most Magic Night winners was unable to feature in the finish of the Golden Slipper running ninth behind Vancouver.

The best in recent times was Bring Me The Maid who ran to 112p in the Magic Night before running third to Mossfun in the Golden Slipper.
