Premier League: Five things Ange Postecoglou has learned from pre-season

3 minute read

Following the culmination of Tottenham's pre-season, all eyes will now be on their Premier League opener at Leicester City on 20th August.

Starting with a penalty shootout defeat to Newcastle United just days after the conclusion of the last Premier League campaign, Spurs went on to beat Hearts, Queens Park Rangers, Vissel Kobe and a K-League XI, before back-to-back defeats to Bayern Munich.

Here are five things Postecoglou will have learned about his squad during pre-season as Spurs seek to end their wait for silverware this term.

A big year ahead for Kulusevski

Scoring a brace of goals last time out in a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich, Dejan Kulusevski once again showed what a quality player he is.

Someone who has gone under the radar at times while the likes of former striker Harry Kane and current captain Heung-min Son have grabbed the headlines, Kulusevski will be a key player for Spurs this season.

Bissouma making progress

A player who has sometimes fallen under his potential, there have been some exciting signs of what to expect from Yves Bissouma ahead of the new campaign.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder looked sharp against Bayern and was able to unlock the Bundesliga outfit's defence on more than a couple of occasions.

Bissouma, long with Kulusevski, can shine under the tutelage of Postecoglou over the coming months.

Gray is ready

Splashing the cash to sign youngster Archie Gray from Leeds United, there were some quarters questioning whether the England youth international was ready for the step up to Tottenham and life in the Premier League.

Judging by his efforts in pre-season, Gray looks more than ready for the campaign ahead.

Even looking comfortable when played as centre-back, midfielder by trade Gray looked composed on the ball and able to pick out passes and beat defenders.

Gray is a rising star and one to watch out for this season.

Areas to work on

Having lost their last two games against Bayern, it's clear there are still areas Spurs need to work on but it would be strange at this stage of the year if there wasn't.

Defence looks to be an area that needs resolving after keeping just one clean sheet in their seven pre-season friendlies.

Conceding 12 goals across those seven games, Postecoglou will be working hard with his players to make sure they are tighter without the ball when they face Leicester in their season opener.

Additions would be useful

Dominic Solanke, Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall have all come through the doors at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer but it feels like further new recruits are needed.

There might well be some players who are moved on over the coming weeks to make space in the squad for new arrivals.

It looks like Spurs are active, as they were strongly linked with Portuguese winger Pedro Neto before he completed his move to rivals Chelsea.

With that in mind, it looks like Tottenham are looking to land at least one winger before the summer transfer window slams shut.
