Entriviere becomes the 26th stakes winner for late Cambridge Stud stallion Tavistock when taking out the Concorde Handicap
Need I Say More (No Nay Never) resumed on Saturday with a victory in the Cambridge Stud Almanzor Trophy (Gr 3, 1200m) at Ellerslie in the first race of the day which started off a very successful day for Te Akau Racing.
Last seen finishing sixth in the New Zealand 2000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Riccarton last October, the son of No Nay Never (Scat Daddy) was caught wide throughout to then challenge at the 200 metres and then gained the upper hand to beat Explosively (Sweynesse) by a long neck. There was another three quarters of a length back to Babylon Berlin (All Too Hard) in third.
"He did it the hard way after being a little slow away," winning trainer Jamie Richards said.
"He really didn't have the speed to muster but thankfully one went around them to give us a bit of cover, which was a big help.
"It was a really tough effort to sit out there and carry that weight, so it is a great way to start the day.
"Mind you, there is going to need to be some improvement in him as he is probably going to have to run against Avantage in his next start (Group 1 BCD Group Sprint)."
Need I Say More was bought for $65,000 by Kilgravin Lodge from the draft of his breeder Burnewang North at the 2018 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale. He was then reoffered at the 2019 Karaka National Yearling Sale - Book 1 by Kilgravin Lodge and bought by Emerald Bloodstock for NZ$100,000.
The winner of five of his seven career starts with his earnings totalling NZ$193,600, Need I Say More is the only winner out of Fastnet Rock (Danehill) mare Bo Bardi. His second dam is US Listed winner Our Golden Dream (Medaglia d'Oro) with this also being the family of Del Mar Oaks (Gr 1, 9f) winner Rutherienne (Pulpit).
Te Akau Racing's excellent day continued with victories in the Karaka 2YO Million (RL, 1200m) before Entriviere (4 m ex Marcey's Belt by Golan) took out the Concorde Handicap (Gr 3, 1200m) becoming the 26th stakes winner for the late Cambridge Stud stallion Tavistock (Montjeu).
Under Danielle Johnson, Entriviere jumped well from her inside gate before settling behind leader Rock 'N' Affair (Rock 'N' Pop). Eased off the fence with 300 metres left to run, Entriviere went to the lead before holding off the late challenge of Justacanta (Per Incanto) to record a length and a quarter victory. Pretty To Sea (Ocean Park) finished third.
"She got the soft run from the good gate and wasted no petrol," Jamie Richards said.
"This was her biggest test and she duly obliged.
"She is a very exciting mare.
"She's by Tavistock but she has speed to burn. She might be bound for the top drawer."
The winner of four of her five career starts, Entriviere is the only stakes winner and one of four winners out of Marcey's Belt (Golan). Her second dam is Stray (Tale Of The Cat) who produced ten winners including Adrift (Zabeel) and Karaka 2YO Million winner Xiong Feng (Iffraaj).
Tavistock, who died following a freak paddock accident at Cambridge Stud last December, has 35 lots catalogued for Book 1.
