The Jamie Richards-trained Need I Say More (3 g No Nay Never - Bo Bardi by Fastnet Rock) continued his dominant form when he added sixth stakes success to his CV when taking out Wellington Guineas (Gr 2, 1400m) at Trentham on Saturday.

The winner of the Waikato Stud Slipper (Gr 3, 1200m) as a juvenile, the gelding added the Group 2 to his record, having already won the Northland Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m), Sarten Memorial (Gr 2, 1400m), Almanzor Trophy (Gr 3, 1200m), Mufhasa Stakes (Listed, 1300m) this season. The son of former Coolmore Stud shuttler No Nay Never (Scat Daddy) has won seven of his nine starts and earned NZ$283,780 in career prize-money.

After jumping from his wide barrier, Johnathan Parkes settled Need I Say More into a smooth rhythm and when Parkes pushed the button in the home straight, Need I Say More bounded to the front. The gelding stayed on strongly to beat last-start Levin Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Bonham (Per Incanto) by a length and a half, while the winner’s stablemate Cornflower Blue (Savabeel) was another nose away in third.

“He had to do a lot of work today, but he’s a winner, no doubt about that,” trainer Jamie Richards said. “Parkesy gets on well with him, and I can’t fault the horse at all. He’s going really well.

“He was a little bit light and immature when he made the trip down to Christchurch in the spring, but with a good break at Te Akau Stud and a heap of feed, he’s come back and had a great late summer and autumn for a really good group of owners.

“I don’t think he needs to do a lot more this season. The horse probably deserves a nice break, and then we’ll get him ready for next year.”

The gelding was purchased at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale by Kilgravin Lodge for $65,000 from the Burnewang North draft and then failed to make his reserve of NZ$150,000 at the New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Book 1 sale in 2019, but was snapped up by David Ellis outside the ring for NZ$130,000.

The son of No Nay Never is the first foal out of the winning Fastnet Rock (Danehill) mare Bo Bardi, who is herself out of Listed winner Our Golden Dream (Medaglia d’Oro).

Further back this is the family of Listed winners Icabad Crane (Jump Star) and Savvy Street (Street Sense).

Bo Bardi’s filly by Dissident (Northern Meteor) was purchased by Robert Kingston Racing for $60,000 at this year’s Inglis Premier Yearling Sale and in 2020 Bo Bardi produced a filly by Impending (Lonhro), while she was covered by Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) in October.

No Nay Never shuttled to Coolmore Australia for two seasons and he has sired 13 winners in Australia and New Zealand, with Need I Say More the only stakes winner. The son of Scat Daddy (Johannesburg) is standing at Coolmore in Ireland for a fee of €125,000.

Age: 3yo Type: OPEN

This G2 1400 for 3yo's only was won by Need I Say More, the Australian bred gelding that has now won seven of his nine outings yet is still underrated. He was wide early but went up second the outer at the 1000m and sat there until taking the lead at the 300m and then held them all comfortably at bay to score by a length and a half in 1:22.89. The winners and where they came from on the home turn were fifth (on the fence and two and a half lengths from the leader), ninth (one-off the inside and three and a half lengths from the leader), fourth (three-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), led (four-off the inside and a length from the leader), fourth (on the inner and two lengths the leader), co-leader (one-off the inside), tenth (four-off the inside and five lengths from the leader), led (six-off the inside and a neck in front) and fourth (six-off the inside and two and a half lengths from the leader). Need I Say More was winning today his sixth Blacktype race and they have been made up of two at G2 (one today), three at G3 and one at Listed level. His winning range is so far 1100m to 1400m and he does like cut in the ground at least. The two times he has missed the top three have both come behind Aegon at G1 and G2. Second home was the Australian bred filly Bonham that ran home hard from ninth the inner and she came down the outer very solidly. Bonham was fresh up having won at G1 here at Trentham mid-January and is a backrunning but strong closing filly. Cornflower Blue ran a game third when second up and she came home well from eighth across the top and sixth turning for home. Fourth home was yet another filly in the Australian bred Hold The Press that led up and once headed at the 300m by the winner fought well as she only got swamped the last 10m. Fifth home was All Black Bourbon that settled back on the inner and he was second last turning for home but ran on well after being held up at the 200m. El Tirador was sixth home that was wide early before getting over and trailing third the inner. He was still third at the 100m but got swamped the final 25m. Sixth home was the favourite Brando that had returned home after finishing last of fourteen beaten over thirteen and a half lengths last at G3 in Australia. The colt was keen early and raced sixth the outer and moved up wide turning for home briefly reaching fourth at the 300m but there was nothing there afterwards and he just battled to be beaten almost two and three-quarter lengths. It was a head scratcher by the colt as he had run a close second at G1 at this track behind the filly Bonham in January, that ran second today so he has gone backwards since. Mahoe was next home, after racing fourth the inner and then being sixth the inside across the top, plus the gelding was ridden by an apprentice and whacked away to be beaten just over three lengths. The rest got beaten almost four and a half lengths and up to over eleven lengths. This was a decent enough G2 field of 3yo's and Need I Say More put them away well with his racing style the greatest asset. Two tidy fillies came from well back to fill the placings and both have been G1 performers (Bonham won and Cornflower Blue placed) adding more oomph to the already impressive record Need I Say More has accomplished so far.
