Domesday colt sells for $380,000
Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)-winning trainer Danny O’Brien is hoping the colt by Domesday (Red Ransom) can follow in the footsteps of his VRC Derby (Gr 1, 2500m)-winning brother Extra Brut and progress into a nice staying type in the future.
The colt, who was catalogued as Lot 131, is the fourth foal out of Dom Perion (Redoute’s Choice), who was purchased at the Inglis Great Southern Sale in foal to Domesday for $6,000 in 2015 and the resulting foal was Extra Brut, who died after being sold Hong Kong last year.
The colt’s third dam is French Listed-winning filly Charlotte Amalie (Gay Mecene), who produced nine winners, including Grade 2-winning pair Esteemed Friend (Gulch) and Badouizm (Sheikh Albadou) and Listed winner Red Monsoon (Miswaki), while she is also the grandam of Grade 2 scorer Yarrow Brae (Deputy Minister).
Having been knocked down for $380,000, the colt will race in the colours of John Wheeler who races a number of horses with O’Brien including Grinzinger Star (Reliable Man) and Russian Camelot (Camelot).
“John Wheeler, a client of mine that bought him, races quite a few staying horses with us. Grinzinger Star and Russian Camelot, and John does a lot of his own stuff and he found the horse to be fair,” said O’Brien.
“He looks at all the horses himself and this was his pick of the sale. When I looked at him, it was very hard not to like the horse. He was a big beautiful scopey staying style of horse. We are always here trying to buy horses that can maybe win a Derby. His brother won one and hopefully we can get this guy to win a nice race as well.
“He's in the top half a dozen of the profile of horses we like to buy.
“John's very strong on buying the one he wants. There was a lot of competition on the horse, he wanted it and kept going. When you are an operator like him, you come to a sale to buy the horse you want.”
Ryan Arnel of Stonehouse Thoroughbreds said the price-tag exceeded all of their expectations and felt the sale had been strong so far.
“You never expect anything. Our job as vendors is to keep our clients as realistic as possible,” said Arnel. “It was certainly well over the reserve that we initially set, but I did expect him to go around the $200,000 sort of mark and north our south of that, you just never know.
“The best strategy on a strong market like this - and it has been an incredible Melbourne Premier Sale; inspections are through the roof and everybody is here - get them on the market and leave it up to the market to determine the value of the horse.
“A good client and our great mate Andrew McDonald bought the mare Dom Perion in foal to what became Extra Brut. Consequently, we sold the Domesday colt weanling for him for $50,000, which was a tremendous result given where he was then, and he went on to be sold at the Classic Sale and became Extra Brut.
“Andrew, on his own accord, did a full blood mating again and this is the foal that has come from that. He has come on in leaps and bounds.
“The success with Extra Brut, who went to Hong Kong and had his accident over there, which was a real tragedy. To have Andrew send us this Domesday to prepare for him again, it’s unbelievable.”
In 2019 Dom Perion produced a colt by Swettenham Stud shuttler Toranado (High Chaparral) and has most recently been covered by Coolmore Stud’s Triple Crown-winning stallion Justify (Scat Daddy).
