3 minute read

A pair of Group 3 winners in 24 hours at Otaki and Ellerslie has cemented Savabeel’s lead across all three New Zealand stallion awards.

Savabeel’s weekend started with his 3YO colt Lincoln Blue proving more than a match for his own age group over a mile in the G3 Wellington Stakes at Otaki on Friday for trainer Lisa Latta.

“He’s a real up and comer,” Latta said. “He holds nominations for the Levin Classic and the Derby.”

A brother to the G1 Queensland Derby winner Brambles, Lincoln Blue coped with the Slow 8 conditions for his second win in seven starts. Another full-brother Lopov is a Listed winner in Australia.

Lincoln Blue was offered by Waikato Stud at the 2015 NZB Karaka Premier Sale where he was opurchased Lisa Latta Racing Stables for $220,000. The colt is now raced by Latta’s long-time clients Lincoln Farms.

Waikato Stud will offer Lincoln Blue’s full-brother at the 2017 Premier Sale at Karaka.

Savabeel’s second G3 winner Coldplay showed she has returned as a four-year-old in career best form after making it consecutive wins this campaign in the G3 Eagles Technology Stakes at Ellerslie for the Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman stable.

“She has matured and come into her own as a four-year-old,” Forsman said.

“She’s probably best at a mile and ridden off the speed. We are thinking of the Cal Isuzu Stakes for her at Te Rapa in a couple of weeks.”

Coldplay (Savabeel x Forty Two Below by O’Reilly) has now recorded four wins and a third from 11 starts with prize money of NZ$114,700.

Her winning dam Forty Two Below is a sister to the Listed winner and G1 placed The Big Chill and has produced three foals to race for three winners.

Coldplay’s second dam Icy Calm was a Listed winner and is a half-sister to stakes-placed Bradman (Danehill).

Forty Two Below current 2YO colt by Savabeel was bought by the Hong Kong Jockey Club at the NZB Premier Sale this year for NZ$475,000.

Her current yearling filly will be offered at January’s NZB Premier Yearling Sale while Forty Two Below was expected to foal to Savabeel again this year.

Savabeel, the sire of 11 Group One winners and New Zealand’s reigning champion sire, already has an impressive list of black type results on the board this season led by his dual G1 winner Kawi.

Kawi won the G1 Makfi Challenge Stakes and Windsor Park Plate at Hastings and goes for another G1 in Perth next Saturday in the Kingston Town Classic.

Savabeel is also the sire of spring carnival G2 winner Nurse Kitchen, G3 winners Spirit Bird and Pump Up The Volume and Listed winner Hall Of Fame.

In 2014/15 Savabeel won the Dewar Trophy (Australasian earnings) and the Grosvenor Award (New Zealand premiership) and last season claimed both awards plus the Centaine Award with $14.3 million in global progeny earnings.

He is again leading all three categories this season.

This G3 mile under set weights and penalties saw a 4yo quinella with the mare Coldplay scoring by a short neck from the male Ronchi. Coldplay was second up having won when resuming and the mare sat seventh before being wide across the top and then surged attractively for her rider the run home to reach second at the 200m. Her will to win was evident as she gained the upper hand albeit narrowly the final 20m to win her fourth race from eleven outings. It was her second G3 win but this came against all comers so has much more worth. Ronchi after trailing the leaders popped off and strode to the lead at the 250m and had just one threat thereafter. He tried hard to repel Coldplay but the 1.5kg difference was telling. Stylish Attack ran on nicely to grab third after the mare got back on the inner then came through to fourth at the 200m. It was her first attempt in a blacktype event plus like the first two home she came into this event as a last start winner. Saint Emilion set the pace as usual and fought well once headed at the 250m but he is more a middle distance type these days. Benzini ran a ripper considering this race was more an after-thought to prepare for bigger spoils ahead. He got back as usual and under the topweight of 57kg kept coming down the outer for a sound fifth. Mime was a tad disappointing after having every chance throughout. Blizzard was better than it can ever read as the grey was wide for the majority of the race and went up third across the top before not surprisingly feeling the strain. He boxed on for seventh beaten five lengths but many would have dropped right out the run home after such an overlander. Endear Rose and Antonio Lombardo were average and the latter since being ridden cold has not won a race since January. In fact four of his last five wins came when sitting second the outer or trailing the leaders and all of them have come when second turning for home. Matimba stopped badly and G3 is beyond him while Trojan Warrior was dreadful in finishing last. He was second at this track beaten a head at G1 over a mile in the Autumn carrying 55kg so was thrown in today at the same weight. Drifting back to last never helped his cause but something was not right and in fact he has been inconsistent already this season with two misses and a win in between. Coldplay is in for a good season as a 4yo mare has so many opportunities and at WFA is very well situated too. Ronchi will keep on delivering too so this race looks a decent look into the future for the rest of the season. The race should stand up for sprinters, milers and middle distance types as is the case for Benzini, Saint Emilion and Blizzard.
