Liefting’s mile plan comes to fruition

3 minute read

Rudy Liefting got his reward when Danza Lad added to his Awapuni record with an upset victory in the feature event on Saturday’s card.

Good things come to those who wait and the Pukekohe trainer finally has a Gr.3 Merial Ancare Metric Mile title to his credit.

“Rudy set the horse for this race and he’s got it,” his wife Megan said. “He has wanted to win this race for a long time after he ran third with Windsor Phew a few years ago.”

Danza Lad was at odds of 15-1 despite winning the Listed Rangitikei Gold Cup over a mile on his last visit to Palmerston North in May and he had also run third in the Gr.3 Winter Cup two runs back.

“It was a fantastic ride and all credit to Kane Smith, he knew how to ride him,” Liefting said.

Danza Lad raced close to the pace set up by The Filly and when Smith cut loose 150 metres out they sailed clear to have the race in safe keeping.

“They’re not really coming from the back so I rode him a bit handier,” Smith said. “I set him alight 700 metres from home and he prevailed.”

Danza Lad has now won 10 of his 39 starts and earlier this year he also secured his jumping ticket to add another string to his winter bow.

Authentic Paddy gave an honest account of himself with his second placing and the hot favourite Spoke To Carlo finished third. He looked to have his chance after getting on the tail of the winner near the home turn.

Merial Ancare Metric Mile (G3)

WT: 53kg Type: OPEN

The G3 mile was contested on an Awapuni track that was between a gluey holding bog and regulation heavy so made for some huge margins throughout the day from first to last. The times said very sticky and testing while being wide was no negative as the card progressed. The winner easily was a noted swimmer Danza Lad that raced handy wide and improved deeper near the home turn before surging clear in the gelatinous mud. It was the tenth win in thirty-nine starts for the 7yo gelding and seven of those have now come at the mile. Danza Lad now has won twice at G3 and once at Listed level. Looser footing would have suited him more but being so fit he got through it today with aplomb. Authentic Paddy fought well for second after racing close while the clear favourite Spoke To Carlo ran home strongly but too late after settling down second last. Our Gazza, also a noted lover of loose heavy ground, ran home solidly late for fourth showing the footing was not ideal but he could get through it. Duffers Creeks battled well for fifth and Thorn Prince under his weight was okay for sixth closer in along the slower lanes clearly come this time of the day. Taurus was poor under his weight considering the form he was in while The Filly showed for the third time now that a mile is too far. North And South a backrunner was poor but she needs it as loose as possible. Spring has not arrived in New Zealand a few weeks into the season with a poultice of wet tracks still the common track denominator. Therefore this race and result only has a bearing should more wet holding tracks happen this spring and summer.
