UK: Caledonian Spring Set For Newmarket

3 minute read

Newmarket's three-day Cambridgeshire Meeting kicks off on Thursday, September 22, with a seven-race card featuring the £34,000 Group Three Somerville Tattersall Stakes.

The seven-furlong contest for juvenile colts and geldings has attracted 15 six-day entries including Caledonian Spring.

The son of Amadeus Wolf, who is trained in Newmarket by Paul D'Arcy, scored comfortably by three lengths over a mile in a Listed contest at Haydock Park on September 3 and had previously looked unlucky in running when a fast-finishing fourth in the seven-furlong Group Three Acomb Stakes at York on August 17.

The Charnwood Stables handler revealed today: “I have entered Caledonian Spring in the Somerville Tattersall Stakes and I will have a look at the likely opposition before deciding whether to run but he is very well at the moment - he's fit and ready to go.

“I was very pleased with his win at Haydock and he has come on a lot for that run.

“He was very unlucky in the Acomb Stakes at York and the step back to seven furlongs will be no problem for him.

“He's entered in the Dubai Dewhurst Stakes and the Racing Post Trophy and he is a very nice horse.”

Richard Hannon, who won the race two years ago with Sir Parky, has three entries including Crius, who finished runner-up to Caledonian Spring at Haydock Park, as well as Rockinante, second in the Group Two Vintage Stakes at Goodwood and Red Seventy.

Farraaj has won two of his three starts for trainer Roger Varian, while Crusade, Electrician, Ghost Protocol, Nawwaar and Rugged Cross were all successful in maiden company on their latest appearance.

Thursday, September 22, also features two Listed races, the £30,000 Princess Royal Richard Hambro EBF Stakes (3.20pm, 18 entries), run over a mile and a half for fillies and mares, which honours the late Richard Hambro who was chairman at Newmarket Racecourses from 2004 to 2009, plus the £30,000 Jockey Club Rose Bowl (4.30pm, 15 entries) over two miles.

The Cambridgeshire Meeting continues on Friday, September 23 with Shadwell Day and on Saturday, September 24, with Betfred Cambridgeshire Day.
